Streamwood's 'Town of Tomorrow' Was Built on a Slab
Streamwood's rural predecessor, Hoosier Grove, held dairy farms from the 1830s through the 1950s, and by 1950 the area's roughly 800 residents were still spread across farms in Hanover Township. That changed in 1956, when Maxon Construction and L H Builders erected 21 pre-assembled houses on concrete slabs at Bartlett and Schaumburg Roads — panelized homes shipped from Indiana by the National Homes Corporation, marketed as a 'Town of Tomorrow' for returning war veterans — and the Village incorporated on February 9, 1957, with population jumping from about 800 to 4,821 by 1960.
Why a 1950s Slab Subdivision Still Needs Water Management
Building an entire subdivision on concrete slabs instead of dug basements means Streamwood's original 1956–57 housing stock has almost no below-grade space to waterproof in the first place — the water management question here is usually about slab moisture, crawl space additions built later, and grading around a foundation poured directly on Kane County's clay-heavy glacial till, rather than the basement wall-crack repairs common in river-town homes built decades earlier.
